Wanted:  New Board of Health Member

A smoke-free Mon County can't happen without
the support of the Board of Health

Monongalia County Board of Health member August Lucci's term expires June 30, 2009.

While Mr. Lucci has been quiet on the subject, his voting record shows that he does not support  smoke-free air.  It is even well-documented that he has close connections to the group opposing smoke free air in Monongalia County.  Mr. Lucci has requested to be re-appointed to another five year term.  If this happens, the chance of passing a meaningful smoking ban during his tenure will be greatly reduced.

Shamefully, the majority of the Board of Health members do not support smoke-free air.  This Board is more interested in pandering to local business interests than protecting our community's health.  They turn a deaf ear to the advice of world health authorities and listen instead to local bar owners.  They ignore scientific studies, but pay attention to tobacco industry propaganda.   They've made it clear that the only action they intend to take on the smoke-free air issue is to avoid taking action.

We believe that there are many qualified candidates for the Board of Health who would be suitable replacements for Mr. Lucci.  We'd obviously prefer a smoke-free air supporter, but somebody willing to give the scientific facts a fair hearing would even be a refreshing change.  Unfortunately, few have applied.

In order to appoint an individual who is committed to public health (we have enough businessmen on the Board, thank you)  the County Commission must have qualified candidates from which to choose.  Please consider applying or talk to qualified people you know and pass along this information.

To be eligible to fill the vacant position, the candidate must:
  • Have knowledge of public health issues
  • Be a member of the Democratic Party or Independent/Non-affiliated
  •  Reside in the Central or Western Magisterial Districts  (this is determined by your polling location -- click here for a list )
  • Submit a letter of interest to the County Commission.  A resume is also recommended.  The letter should include all of the above information and be sent or hand delivered to the Monongalia County Commission, Monongalia County Courthouse,  High Street,  Morgantown,  WV  26505.  Information may also be emailed to moncom@aol.com.
  •  Additionally all applicants should request an application packet from Diane DeMedici at moncom@aol.com or by calling 304-291-7257.  The packet will include a background check authorization. There is no specific deadline, but the position could be filled at any time.
The BOH meets every other month at 9:00AM on the last Thursday.  Members are paid $100 for each meeting.
